My Language Learning and Culture History

I learned English since 11 years old, when I was in the first grade of Junior High School. At that time, in my Junior High school, my English teacher always gave motivation to her students so that the students would not afraid to learn English. I was one of her students who were motivated in learning English. Although, I was not quite good to speak in English, I always tried to speak until I brave enough to speak in. I started to be active students in my English class. Also, I practiced my pronunciation in order to get better pronunciation in speaking.  Besides, I had positive experiences in learning English, when I was in the second grade of Junior High school ;I joined an English Speech Competition in my school, and I was the first winner in the competition. From that, I felt more motivated to learn English. Then, I also joined the private English lesson because I wanted to improve my English proficiency.

When the first time I learned English, I wanted to be like International journalist, Television Anchor, and English teacher. Being International journalist and Television Anchor were required good English proficiency and wide experiences, so I tried to improve my English proficiency in order to be international journalist, television anchor, or English teacher. While, being an English teacher was also one of my expectations when I learned English, because the English teacher should have good ability to teach others. Why English teacher?, because  I thought the English teacher could help the Indonesian students to be international students by learning English.

Furthermore, my ideal models of English were American and British’s English speakers. They became my English models because they had good English proficiency, such as : good pronunciation in speaking. At that time, I thought they had perfect English, because English as their first language, so I believed they were master of English. Actually, I got exposed them through TV show, and songs. For instance : when I watched Oprah TV Show , Oprah Winfrey as the host had a very good American English accent, pronunciation, and intonation . In short, I liked the way Oprah Winfrey talked to the audiences or guests star in the show. Besides, being the International Journalist, Television Anchor, and English Teacher were my imagine communities. Those imagine communities also affect me on the way I learned English.  I was more motivated in learning English by watching English TV Show, English movies, and listening English songs in order to enhance my English proficiency especially in my speaking skill. Moreover, I also tried to imitate the way American and British native spoke the English word or sentences.

Learning English in the University, especially in the English Department give big chance for me to learn English deeper. My expectations  before coming to the university were I would  be able to improve my skill in English, knew the new knowledge  related to English lesson, such as ; grammar, speaking, listening, and writing lesson. Yet, I was surprised  after coming to English Department ,because I also have some of the native English lecturer and learned the literature of English itself, such as; drama, prose, poetry, and etc. Moreover, I find many special things in the English Department of Satya Wacana Christian University. Furthermore,  the lecturers give a big chance for each student to be active in a class; in this case students will be able to share their thought, opinion, argument, give question, do the presentation task, writing assignments and etc. Regarding to those things, I think materials that is given in English Department is very valuable and important in order to enrich my English proficiency.

Graduating  from the English Department with title Bachelor of English Education is my first expectation, and then I hope I can continue my language learning plans and goals. My plans are I want to continue study in learning English in Magister of English Education. The reason why I will continue my study is that I want to learn more about English, especially in English Education. From that, I will become an English teacher, so I can teach English to the Indonesian people. Then, I expect I have own English private lesson in my village. I want to the villagers also know and learn English. So, English is not only learned for people in the city, but also people in the village.

 Talking about culture is very important. As I am Javanese and Indonesian, I have Javanese and Indonesian culture which should be preserved. As the time goes by, learning English affect my culture, especially in my language. In my daily conversation, I use code-mixing between English, Javanese, and Indonesia when I talk to my friends. For instance, when I say thank you to my friend, I will say “ Maturnuwun  ya, sudah menolongku, you are my best friend”, it means “ Thanks anyway, you have helped me, you are my best friend” . Regarding to my code-mixing, I think it is okay to use code-mixing as long as I know where, when, and to whom I use it.

In my view point, learning English affects 10 % on my culture, especially in the part of  languages itself.  It can be seen from the way I communicate with others, especially with my friends by using code-mixing between English and Bahasa Indonesia. Besides, English also affect my view on my culture. At first, I only view my culture as my important heritage which must be preserved in my local society. Through learning English, I also think my culture should be introduced internationally, so that there will be balance between English and my culture. All in all, it can be concluded that learning language also can affect the culture. 

"nine eleven" : my perception

My Perceptions of 9/11

            “Shock, Angry, and Unbelievable” were my impressions when I heard the breaking news on the one of stations TV about 9/11 attack in WTC (World Trade Center).  The shocking moment was when the news stated the doer of that coverage used a word “Jihad” in Islamic religion as his reason doing the attack. In my viewpoint, his act was not included to “Jihad”, but it was an evil and criminal. Moreover, he didn’t understand what actually the application of the word ‘Jihad’ was. He only saw it from his bad point of views.  As I know as a Moslem, the word “Jihad” means simply a holy war of the struggle against or resistance to something for the sake of a goal, or spiritual fight against the evil in yourself. For instance, we can apply “Jihad” when there are some people who oppose religion’ teaching. However, we also do “Jihad” in ourselves, when we have bad habits and we should fight against our bad habits.

            After the 9/11 coverage, some Americans fear of Moslem and think that all Moslems were so dangerous. I knew such an issue by watching the news about 9/11 which was reported about America’s reactions on 9/11.  They thought that Islamic religion taught about radicalism, therefore, it was big wrong for the statement.  In my opinion, all religions teach people to behave nicely and love peace, including Islam. However, there were some people who act fanatic badly and love war, and they said that their acts were based on the religion rule. How come, they think like that way? I don’t know exactly why the doer of 9/11 did it. He couldn’t tolerate others. He did it without using his right thinking. Why did he like war and killed people?  All in all, the 9/11’ coverage reminds me to appreciate others’ differences, tolerate the others, and not to use Religion’ teaching to do the coverage. In short, I really love harmony in diversity.

            

Response of Arundhati Roy's speech “Instant-Mix Imperial Democracy. Buy One Get One Free”

In this section, I will share about my response of Arundhati Roy's speech. This was one of  my assignments when I took American Culture and Literature Class in the previous semester , I had to give a narrative response toward  Arundhati Roy's speech in a form of journal , so this was my response . check it out:

Response of Arundhati Roy's speech “Instant-Mix Imperial Democracy. Buy One Get One Free”  

“George Bush the Lesser’’ is one of the sarcastic phrase in  Arundhati Roy’s speech in biting the US government under George Bush leadership. I like the way Roy critique the US in her speech. She looks relax when delivering her speech. Furthermore, she is brave and firm to share her point of views toward the US policy in invading the Middle East country, especially in Iraq. She gives high quality speech, because she is not only yelling in the sarcastic way without any reason, but she also provides some facts events related to the US invasion in Iraq. Moreover, her speech is further focus on the relation between the US invasion in Iraq, US and Sadam Hussein, George Bush and Donal Rumsfeld response, also the US news media.

            Furthermore, I found many pieces of sarcastic way in her speech.  I will share some of my finding. First sarcastic term is when she gave the title of her speech   “Instant-Mix Imperial Democracy. Buy One Get One Free”, it refers to a critique for the US government. The entire people in the world know that US is a democratic nation. However, the US transform into half Imperial nation instantly through Bush’ power by invading other countries. Bush seems like being a dictator by using his power as the US president to ask the US army do the invasion in Iraq, and then control the authority in Iraq.  Also, she critiques George Bush’s comment “ I will never apologize for the United States. I don’t care what the facts are” on the USS Vincennes incident by stating that the Bush’ comment is a maxim. When she repeat the comment ‘ I don’t care what the facts are’ , then  she say : ‘what a perfect maxim for the New America Empire’.  It means that Roy want to emphasize that Bush’s comment is only a maxim, not the real meaning. There is a secret behind Bush’s comment. Based on Roy’s view point, the real meaning of ‘I don’t care what the facts are’ is ‘The facts can be whatever we want them to be’.

            Another sarcastic phrase is when she says “George Bush the Lesser”, then her audiences laugh loudly. Roy says it because she wants response the Bush’s words related to invasion in Iraq: “it would be suicidal for the US not to attack Iraq”. In other word, it can be conclude that Bush is a lesser who doesn’t give a wise option to his people. He only gives unpleasant option which is a must to attack Iraq. Therefore, he tend to be love a war.

            The awesome sarcastic part in her speech is when she says “The United States Can Do Whatever The Hell Wants, And That’s Official”. She has some reason to answer the question ‘why does she say like that way?”. The reason are  she is so despise for the US news media which doctrine  the Americans by their  insinuation news, especially when the media did a survey of American public who believed that 9/11 attacks on WTC and the Pentagon was Sadam Hussein responsibility. Then the news also reported that 55% American believed that Al-Qaeda was supported by Sadam Hussein. Based on that news, Americans seems to be provoked to give support to invasion in Iraq. In short, it means that the US can do what they want in many ways, as long as the result is the best for US government.

            At last but not the least, my favorite biting part of Roy’s speech is in her statement about “Empire is on the move, and Democracy is its sly new war cry. Democracy, home-delivered to your doorstep by daisy-cutters. Death is a small price for people to pay for the privilege of sampling this new product: Instant-Mix Imperial Democracy (bring to a boil, add oil, then bomb)”. This is the best part of her speech in giving critique to the US.  Implicitly, she wants the US government realize that the US is democratic nation not Imperial, and the US should stop the war. All in all, the US government under Bush’ leadership must apply the World Peace without a war.

"Physics Words"

“Physics Words”

These are some collection of physics words which was made by my friend. I don’t know the exactly reason why he wrote these kinds of word. Maybe, he wants to share his feeling through the physics terms. Umm, or maybe someone’ feeling can be explained through Physics Science .Moreover, I think it’s so marvelous. Yeap, just check it out:

§  indah bila mencintai seseorang dengan mengetahui sifat n struktur partikel elementer penyusunya hatinya.

§  panjang gel hatimu seperti sinar-X meskipun pendek namun energi hatimu tetap paling besar untukku

§  unsur dgn elektron valensi bnyak akan sulit berikatan n setimbang, tapi jika telah berikatan butuh energi besar untuk memisahkannya.hmm....

Born to TEACH

"Born to TEACH" mungkin bagi beberapa orang bilang ,,"apaan tuh istilah lebay banget" --> Born to TEACH , tapi bagiku istilah itu sangat berarti , karena I love teaching , aku suka mengajar , jiwaku sudah terpatri untuk mengajar. Pengalaman mengajarku memang masih seumur jagung...hehehe, tapi aku selalu berusaha untuk bisa menyalurkan ilmu yang aku miliki kepada siswa-siswaku.  Bagiku mengajar tingkatan level usia berapapun tetap menyenangkan selama aku bisa menyalurkan ilmu yang aku miliki kepada mereka (read :siswa) dan merekapun memahami apa yang aku jelaskan . Aku sangat menikmati pekerjaanku ini sebagai seorang guru ( seorang pendidik) generasi penerus bangsa . Aku berharap kelak  bisa menjadi seorang guru/ pendidik yang memberikan kontribusi positif kepada masyarakat , bangsa, dan negara Republik Indonesia .
